One of the key problems in monument preservation in Budapest is the intense soiling of limestone buildings. The facades in Buda Castle Hill (a World Heritage Site) or the House of Parliament show intense deterioration due to the interaction of atmospheric pollutants and the carbonates. Field measurements and laboratory analyses have shown that travertine, oolitic- and compact limestone behave differently. Although all limestone facades are covered by weathering crusts, the crust adherence and the 'sensitivity to weathering' of the limestone facade depends on substrate properties.
